Biographical Information[edit]
Shortstop Bobby Wilkins played baseball at Catawba College at the same time as future big leaguers Vern Benson and Ray Poole (who also later played with the Philadelphia Athletics, but not at the same time as Wilkins).
Wilkins reached the majors as a 21 year old with the 1944 Athletics and played parts of two seasons with the club, backing up shortstop Ed Busch. Following his big league career, he returned to the minors for nine years, four of them with the Shreveport Sports of the Texas League.
After retiring from baseball, Wilkins returned to Shreveport, where he worked for the Sheriff's Department and coached high school baseball. He died in early 2010 following a lenghty illness.
