Biography

Bobby Brownlie holds the career record for strikeouts at Rutgers University, where he established himself as one of college baseball's finest pitchers. He was Big East Conference Freshman of the Year, a Golden Spikes Award finalist, and won the McNeese Award. He was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the first round of the 2002 amateur draft. Scouted for the Cubs by Billy Blitzer, Brownlie decided to holdout after he was drafted, signing in March 2003 for a $2.5 million dollar signing bonus.

After a strong start in the organization, Brownlie never lived up to expectations with the Cubs. His record was 9-21 during his final two seasons in the system and he was released in the spring of 2007. After posting an 8-4 record during a tour of duty with the Newark Bears, Brownlie signed with the Cleveland Indians organization in July of 2007. He put up a 3.17 ERA in nine games with Cleveland's double-A squad, the Akron Aeros.
