Biographical Information[edit]
Bob Long was a professional umpire starting in 1982, when he worked in the New York-Penn League. He moved to the Florida State League in 1983, then to the AA Eastern League in 1985. He also umpired in the Venezuelan Winter League in 1986. In 1989 his contract was bought by the AAA International League. At the end of the 1991 season, his contract was purchased by the National League for the 1992 and 1993 seasons to serve as a potential replacement for umpires absent for various reasons, while still working AAA games on a regular basis.
He umpired a total of 12 major league games in 1992 and 1993. His first major league game was on August 22, 1992, with the Houston Astros the visitors at Veterans Stadium against the Philadelphia Phillies. He continued to umpire in AAA after his major league stint, until 2017 when he retired from professional baseball. Long is a member of the Randolph High School Hall of Fame and the Cranberry Baseball League Hall of Fame. After his retirement, he continued to speak about and teach umpiring and worked amateur leagues in the Boston area.
