Biographical Information[edit]
Bob Langsford, from Louisville, KY, played one game for the 1899 Louisville Colonels. He was 33 years old and it was the team's last year as a major league entry.
He was not, however, the oldest player on the team, as Chief Zimmer and Dummy Hoy were several years older.
Langsford played for quite a few minor league teams, rarely staying in the same place two years in a row. He did, however, play parts of three seasons for New Orleans.
The book Baseball in Toledo has a set of photos of the 1897 league champion Mud Hens, and Langsford's photo is included.
He died on January 10, 1907 after he looked in the mirror and drank an ounce of carbolic acid. Langsford apparently placed a photo of an actress named Elsie Crescey on the floor in front of himself as he did this. The listing of his suicide on Baseball Almanac says that he had known mental problems.
