Biographical Information[edit]

Third baseman Robert Cummins spent five years in the minor leagues, playing in 1943 and from 1947 to 1950.

He began his career as an 18-year-old in 1943, hitting .246 with five home runs in 52 games split between the Kingsport Cherokees (.254/.304/.448 in 50 G) and Roanoke Red Sox (6 for 30, 2B). He then missed 1944 to 1946 to service in the US Navy in World War II. In 1947, Cummins returned to professional baseball and hit .271/.319/.483 with 110 RBI, 35 doubles and 18 home runs in 122 games for the San Jose Red Sox. He tied for 5th in the California League in doubles, was 4th in home runs and tied for 9th in RBI. With San Jose again in 1948, Cummins hit .278/.371/.449 with 17 home runs and 74 RBI in 127 games to finish 6th in home runs. In 1949, with the El Paso Texans, he hit .283 and slugged .479 with 12 home runs in 72 games. He wrapped up his career in 1950, hitting .269/.376/.427 with 14 home runs, 28 steals and 104 RBI in 132 games for the Marysville Peaches. He tied for 7th in the Far West League in RBI and tied for fifth in steals.

Overall, Cummins hit .271 with 538 hits, 110 doubles and 66 home runs in 513 games spread over five seasons.

He later served in the Korean War and worked 34 years for Pacific Bell.
