Bo McClendon is the son of Lloyd McClendon.

Bo was twice All-Conference in high school and set his school's single-season (31) and career (61) records for steals. As a college freshman in 2007, he played 11 games with three starts. He was a bench player in 2008 and 2009. As a senior, he hit .269 with a .424 OBP. The Detroit Tigers chose him in the 39th round of the 2010 amateur draft. He was the highest Valparaiso draftee since 2001.

McClendon made his pro debut on June 23, batting ninth and playing DH. He was one for four. He became teammates with Patrick Leyland, also a son of former Pittsburgh Pirates manager; Patrick's father Jim Leyland was managing Detroit and Lloyd McClendon was a coach for him.
