Biographical Information[edit]
Delaware native Billy Sullivan was drafted by the equivalent of his hometown team, the Philadelphia Phillies, in the 28th round of the 2017 amateur draft coming out of high school, but decided to go on to college. He pitched for the University of Delaware in 2018 and 2019, although he made only two appearances the second year and missed the rest of the season with an injury, then did not pitch at all when the 2020 college season ended prematurely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2020 amateur draft lasted only five rounds, also as a result of the pandemic, and understandably he was not one of the few lucky amateurs to be selected that year, but he did agree to a contract with the Phillies on June 16th.
He started his professional career in May of 2021 with the Jersey Shore BlueClaws, after not having pitched at any level in two full years. After 5 games in relief with an ERA of 1.50, he was promoted to the AA Reading Fightin Phils and went 1-1, 3.00 in 15 games. In 2022, he spent a full season at Reading, going 5-1, 4.59 in 44 games, including 2 starts. He struck out 77 batters in 51 innings, but also walked 36. On March 29, 2023, he was traded to the Oakland Athletics in return for OF Cristian Pache as the Phillies were desperate for an outfielder with major league experience. He was assigned to the Las Vegas Aviators of the AAA Pacific Coast League to start the season.
