Biographical Information[edit]

Billy Evers was drafted in the 35th round of the 2004 amateur draft by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays out of Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, FL.

Evers, whose father, Bill Evers, is a bench coach with the Devil Rays, had worked out for the Rays at Tropicana Field but was still surprised when a Tampa Bay scout called him with the news he had been drafted in the 35th round.

"They had shown more interest, had scouts at a couple of my games," said Evers, who pitched a seven-inning no-hitter for Eckerd against Rollins College in March. "It's definitely a thrill to get drafted, though I'd never have thought it'd be as a pitcher growing up. Still, it's been a dream come true, something I've wanted to all my life."

Evers did not pitch at River Ridge, starring at second base, but nonetheless made numerous pleadings to Knights coach Jack Homko to let him have a cameo on the mound.

"I was always saying, "Coach, let me pitch. Coach, I can throw an inning if we're getting beat or something,' " he said. "I really didn't pitch much at Eckerd until this season, but that ended up being what the scouts liked from me."

Evers had just returned from a trip to River Ridge to get in some throwing when he found out he had been drafted. Homko said Evers always threw hard, even if it wasn't on the mound.

"He was a hard-working kid with a great baseball background," Homko said. "I"m glad for him."
