Biographical Information[edit]

Bill Wittrock pitched for four teams during four years in the majors. In his rookie year at age 20 with the St. Louis Browns of the American Association in 1890, his 3.51 ERA was better than most of the regular rotation. His named is usually mis-spelled as Whitrock in most sources.

Whitrock was born in Cincinnati, OH. At age 19 he pitched for the team based in Springfield, OH and the next year he came to the majors.

Although his performance was certainly good enough, he didn't come back to the majors until 1893. He was with three minor league teams in 1891 and two in 1892. In 1893 he spent part of the season with Memphis and part with the Louisville Colonels.

Bill was not very effective with the Colonels in either 1893 or 1894, and spent most of that second year with the Cincinnati Reds. In 1895 he played for four separate minor league teams, while in 1896 he spent time with Mobile as well as with the Philadelphia Phillies, for whom he appeared in 2 games with an ERA of 3.00.

In 1897 he pitched for five different minor league teams.
