Biographical Information[edit]

Bill Phyle pitched in 1898, 1899, and 1901, and then came back in 1906 to play 21 games as a third baseman.

One source says he was Native American (Lakota).

Born in Duluth, MN, in the minors he played for Toronto, Kansas City, Minneapolis, Milwaukee and Montreal.

He is also known as Billy or Billie.

When he came up as a pitcher with the 1898 Chicago Orphans, Sam Mertes and Jack Taylor were also on the team that year (Taylor was a rookie while Mertes was a second-year man). Years later, when he played third base for the 1906 St. Louis Cardinals, veterans Mertes and Taylor were also with the team.
