William Carl Lyon


Bill Lyon began his career as a sportswriter at age 18 for the Champaign-Urbana News Gazette. After graduation from the University of Illinois in 1961, he worked in East Saint Louis, Illinois, and Evansville, Indiana, before returning to the News Gazette.

In 1972, he was hired by the Philadelphia Inquirer where he served as a general assignment reporter. Later he wrote a regular column, often focusing on baseball. Lyon officially retired from the Inquirer in 2005, after 49 years as a sportswriter. Lyon is currently writing a series for the Inquirer on his diagnosis with Alzheimer's Disease (2017).
