Biographical Information

Umpire William "Lord" Byron was known as the "Singing umpire". He once threw Casey Stengel out of a game by singing "To the clubhouse you must go, you must go, you must go. To the clubhouse you must go, my fair Casey!" to the tune of "London Bridge".

Byron was a steamfitter who played minor league ball in 1892, but couldn't hit. He was an umpire in the Michigan State League in 1896 and 1900 to 1904. He moved up to the South Atlantic League in 1905-1907, Eastern League in 1910, Southern Association in 1911 and International League in 1912. Byron then worked the National League from 1913 to 1919, then the Pacific Coast League from 1920 to 1924.

Byron umpired the 1914 World Series.
