Biographical Information[edit]

William Buchanan was an amateur umpire who worked one major league game on April 3, 1998. It was Opening Day at Busch Stadium, but the umpiring crew for the game between the St. Louis Cardinals and San Diego Padres did not show up on time, except for home plate umpire Eric Gregg. Thus three amateur umpires were rounded up to work the bases at the start of the game, including Buchanan, who worked second base. The rest of the crew eventually showed up and replaced the amateurs in the 4th inning. Thus Buchanan's major league career consists of less than half a game.
