Biographical Information[edit]
Robert Watkins "Bert" Yeabsley made his reputation as a top-notch semi-pro baseball and football player before being signed in 1916 by the Philadelphia Athletics, who sent him to the minors. In 1918 the Philadelphia Phillies signed him and took him to spring training, but planned to send him to the minors. However, he joined the Navy and played service ball. In 1919 the Phils brought him to spring training, then brought him north with the team. He made his first major league appearance on May 28th.
When released a couple of weeks after his debut, Bert refused to be sent to the minors. He played semi-pro ball for years after that, as well as semi-pro football and also baseball for a company team.
He became a top golf player, and also worked as a salesman for various companies.
