Biographical Information[edit]
Bernardo Rodríguez was the first pitcher in the history of the Cuban national team. A star for Regla BBC in Cuba's amateur circuit, he got the nod in the opener of the 1926 Central American Games and shut out Mexico on five hits while helping his own cause (1 for 4, R). He thus had the first complete game, win and shutout in international baseball tourneys as well. [1] He had a brief pro career in Cuba, going 0-2 in six games for Marianao in the 1926-1927 Cuban Triangular League. [2] He was 1-1 with a 6.29 ERA for the 1927 Cuban Stars East. He coached for Cuba when they finished second in the 1941 Amateur World Series and won the 1943 Amateur World Series. [3] His grandson, René Arocha, also pitched for the national team (after being taught the game by Rodríguez) and would spend time in the major leagues. [4]
