Biographical Information[edit]
Bernard Cobb was a minor league first baseman from 1933 to 1942. He was a consistent .300 hitter, posting averages of .336, .325, .382, .304, and .302 in his first five seasons in pro ball. The .302 mark came in the 1937 IL, the top tier of the minors (then called AA). He wore glasses, and also was known as a good whistler and was dubbed "Whistlin' Rufus" by Pep Young.[1]
Cobb was born with the family name Kafchinski and changed it to Cobb during his school years. His contract was purchased by the Pittsburgh Pirates after 1935 but he never appeared in the big leagues and spent the 1936 season with the Tulsa Oilers of the Texas League. [2]
