Biographical Information[edit]

Ben Rochefort was in one major league game not long after he turned 18 years old. He played first base in a game that occurred in the last week of the 1914 American League season. His team, the Philadelphia Athletics, went on to win the pennant. Rochefort replaced Ferdie Moore, who started the game, and played four innings, batting eighth in front of pitcher Herb Pennock. Ben went 1-for-2. Ferdie was also 18 years old and played only two major league games. Both Ben and Ferdie were born in Camden, NJ.

The database shows Ben as attending Temple University in 1914, but it doesn't say whether he did so before or after his major league game. He is also shown as attending Georgetown University, but no year is given.

Wikipedia's entry on him says he played college ball at Temple, but Wikipedia's entry on the Temple baseball team says they only started play in 1927.

Ben's last name at birth was Gilbert and he played some ball under the name Ben/Benny Gilbert. In particular, he was in the minors in 1919 under that name. [1]
