Biographical Information[edit]
Ben Caffyn, from Peoria, IL, played a bit more than a month in the outfield for the 1906 Cleveland Naps. He had 103 at-bats, hitting .194 (20-for-103) with four doubles, while playing 30 games, mostly in left field. The regular left fielder was Jim Jackson, who was in his fourth big league season and on his way out; he hit only .214 in 1906. The next year, Bill Hinchman won the left field job, playing 152 games although he hit only .228.
Caffyn is featured in the book "The Road to Cooperstown: A Father, Two Sons, and the Journey of a Lifetime". Chapter 21 is titled "Ben Caffyn and the Cleveland Naps". His obituary says he was a veteran of the Spanish American War and World War I. After the majors, he played and managed some semi-pro ball in Peoria. He was a fireman after his baseball days.
