Biographical Information[edit]
Barry Winford was a minor league catcher for three years.
Winford was taken by the Texas Rangers in the 12th round of the 1989 amateur draft. He hit .359/.464/.505 for the Butte Copper Kings that summer, with 54 runs in 61 games. He led the Pioneer League in average, 7 points ahead of Scott Pose, and was second in runs, one behind Tom Goodwin. He was named the All-Star catcher and Baseball America rated him as the circuit's 8th-best prospect.
In 1990, Barry fell to .238/.324/.316 with 14 steals in 17 tries for the Gastonia Rangers; he had 26 passed balls in 89 games at catcher. In 1991, he ended his career with just a .216/.310/.286 line for the Charlotte Rangers.
