Biographical Information[edit]
Pitching for the Minnesota Twins on June 22, 2024, Bailey Ober needed just 89 pitches to throw a complete game in defeating the Oakland Athletics, 10-2 - but still recorded 10 strikeouts. It was only the second time since pitch counts began to be systematically recorded in 1988 that a pitcher had managed a nine-inning complete game with double-digit strikeouts in 90 pitches or less, the other being David Cone in his 1999 perfect game. No twins pitcher had managed a complete game with that few pitches since Carlos Silva in 2005.
Bailey was drafted by the Twins in the 12th round of the 2017 amateur draft of the College of Charleston, having previously been a 23rd round selection by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2015. He reached the majors with the Twins in 2021, going 3-3, 4.19 in 20 starts and 92 1/3 innings. He made just 11 starts in 2022, but had an excellent ERA, finishing at 2-3, 3.21. He also made four appearances in the minors that season, after dealing with injuries. In 2023, he continued to be effective without much fanfare, ending up with an ERA of 3.43 in 26 starts totaling 144 1/3 innings, and an 8-6 record. His ERA+ was 124 after having been 122 the year before and the Twins won a division title. He appeared in two postseason games, both in the Division Series against the Houston Astros. he lost Game 1 as the starting pitcher on October 7th, giving up 3 runs in as many innings, then came in in relief in Game 3 on October 10th, when he allowed 3 more runs in 1 1/3 innings.
His remarkable complete game in June of 2024 was the first of his career, but already his seventh win of the season, one off his career high after 15 starts.
