Biographical Information

Catcher Babe Phelps played eleven seasons in the majors with a lifetime batting average of .310. With the Brooklyn Dodgers, he hit .364 in 1935 (in 121 at-bats) and .367 in 1936 (in 319 at-bats). He qualified for the batting title in 1936 and finished second in the National League behind Paul Waner at .373.

Before he became a major league regular, he played in the minors with the Hagerstown Hubs, Youngstown Buckeyes and Albany Senators.

While Phelps was with the Dodgers, they hired Babe Ruth as a coach, and Phelps became friends with Ruth.

After his major league days he worked for a railroad.
