BR Bullpen talk:Community Portal
Comments from previous readers..[edit]
I was very excited to come across your new Wiki. I fully understand how difficult it is to start a Wiki and I commend you for initiating it. I also fully support the idea of putting MLB knowledge into a Wiki-format. I wanted to introduce myself and ask a few questions. My name is Oliver Brown. I and a community of others have been working over the past two years in Wikipedia, creating thousands of articles about baseball history, players, stadiums, records, terms, positions, rules (ie Batting out of turn) etc. There is even a Baseball portal to Wikipedia. These baseball articles have been accepted by the Wikipedia community and have not come under any fire or scrutiny for deletion. I've really been amazed at what sorts of baseball-related articles I've been able to create in Wikipedia. There are a few reasons why I bring this to your attention. First off, I don't want you to write a bunch of material and then find out that it's already out there. Secondly, I don't want anyone at Wikipedia or The Bullpen to redo work that's already been done. There's so much work to be done, why do it twice? How can we avoid doing redundant work? Thirdly, I want both Wiki communities to know of each other so that we can help each other and work together. (i.e. Can we share work?) Lastly, I'd like to find out or figure out is what will/does The Bullpen provide that isn't already covered in Wikipedia. Will the articles here be covering things that wouldn't be acceptable in Wikipedia? I support your new Wiki completely. My questions are meant to help it take shape. Sincerely, Kingturtle 22:47, 24 Jul 2005 (EDT)
I believe that the Bullpen is meant to be a baseball-exclusive resource. For instance, while you can look up "baseball" in a standard encyclopedia, it would be much easier to find articles on the stuff you want in a baseball-exclusive resource. User:TopGear
There are certain advantages to all baseball. When you search for 755 it has only one meaning so there is less disambiguation. Also its good to have the automatic creation of every player in baseball history with bio info. [User:Pti|Pti]] 22:18, 17 Aug 2005 (EDT)
The page [[RSB]] is a users discussion page. It should be moved to a discussion area like maybe [[BR_Bullpen:RSB]]. Any suggestions? - Pti 10:14, 21 Aug 2005 (EDT)
I guess I've been treating this Wiki as a supplement to B-Ref: probably it works best by giving some narrative form and qualitative "feel" to things like the team pages by year, which I don't see done in nearly as much detail on Wikipedia. I agree that much of the player bio, at least for the more illustrious players, has probably been done better on Wikipedia and should not be haphazardly duplicated over here. The info on current teams and players on Wikipedia is just great, and by its nature can't be duplicated over here because B-Ref doesn't include years in progress. In any case, I have a few more years to write about the Phillies and Rangers before I run out of expertise ... I am going to try to provide links to Wikipedia pages where they are more authoritative or complement whatever I'm doing. --BDC 21:04, 22 Aug 2005 (EDT)
Does anyone know how to make succession boxes? I'd like to do some stuff showing continuity but I can't figure out how to make the boxes work. See the bottom of this page, for what I'm talking about. If you have ideas, reply here or the email is on my user page. --Scott
Does anyone know how to get/create a list of all of the templates on the pages? -- Admin 17:56, 13 Oct 2005 (EDT)
I'm not exactly sure what you mean. On my page User:Pti I have a link to all the "templates" in the all pages section? - Pti 08:48, 14 Oct 2005 (EDT)
With the addition of <noinclude> should we start adding Categories to templates and a new larger category of Category:Templates within Category:BR Bullpen? --MichaelEng 15:21, 30 June 2006 (EDT)
I also edit Wikipedia and understand what this is supposed to be, so here's a suggestion: At this point, I'm going through the Red Sox all time roster and finding pages that Wikipedia should have (such as Max Bishop). On this Wiki, it would help to know which pages need updating, as of right now everyone has a page even if it's just info available on BR in the first place. Good luck and godspeed.
I'm curious why not just contribute the information to Wikipedia since it already has such a vast amount of information about each player. Does anybody have any thoughts?
In a lot of cases, they have a lot less and the information is aimed more at a general audience with basic details rather than a baseball-fan audience. --Mischa 20:56, 4 November 2006 (EST)
What is the policy here about sharing work? Can articles here be copied into Wikipedia? And vice versa? Kingturtle 11:25, 28 November 2007 (EST)
Our policy is to seek original material on the Bullpen. We do not mind articles being copied into Wikipedia if proper credit is given to this site. For the reverse, we discourage copying articles wholesale from Wikipedia: the links and formatting usually do not work well, and our audience is more specialized than Wikepedia's, so that a lot of re-writing is usually required. --Philippe 11:57, 28 November 2007 (EST)
