BR Bullpen:Manual of Style (Japan-related articles)

The following conventions are used for Japan-related articles.

Romanization

If you are not sure how to romanize a word, please also provide its kanji, hiragana, or katakana so that another user can later verify or correct your romanization.

The Bullpen uses a modified for of Hepburn romanization.

Personal Names

Personal, organization, and company names should generally be romanized according to the nameholder's preference, or if it cannot be determined, established English spelling (e.g., Ichiro Suzuki and Sadaharu Oh).

Generally, {{Langbox}} should be used to show the native script and both romanizations. Please be sure to create redirects from both romanizations and any other likely romanizations and common misspellings, however these are not required to be in the article.

Name order

Even though it is standard practice in Japan for the family name to be written first, and this practice is often used in media; the policy of the Bullpen is to use western order (Given name Family name).

Registered Names

In Japanese leagues, players required to register their playing names. While in most cases players choose their birth names, others use alternate names or change their kanji for luck. For changes in registered names, redirects should be created, but these changes should be noted within the article with the new name bolded. For instance, in an article about Ichiro a note should be made that for the 1994 season he changed his registered name to イチロー from 鈴木 一朗.

Place names

For prefectures, use the form [[{prefecture-name} Prefecture]] without ken, fu, or to, for example, Tochigi Prefecture. As an exception, use the title Hokkaido Prefecture as Hokkai Prefecture sounds quite awkward.

For cities, use the form [[{city-name}, {prefecture-name}]]; for example, Otaru, Hokkaido.

For districts, use the form [[{district-name} District, {prefecture-name}]]; for example, Tosa District, Kochi.

For towns and villages, use the form [[{town or village-name}, {prefecture-name}]]; for example, Kamikuishiki, Yamanashi.

For wards in cities, use the form [[{ward-name}-ku, {city-name}]]; for example, Naka-ku, Yokohama.

For the 23 special wards in Tokyo, use the form [[{ward-name}, Tokyo]]; for example, Shibuya, Tokyo.
