Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Avery Weems was drafted in the 6th round of the 2019 amateur draft by the Chicago White Sox out of the University of Arizona. His results there had been mixed, with ERA's of 5.69 and 7.15 during his two seasons after transferring from Yavapai College, but the Sox liked his stuff. He was used as a swingman in college and led his team in games pitched both years. After signing with Chicago, he split the 2019 season between the AZL White Sox and Great Falls Voyagers of the Pioneer League, going a combined 5-4, 2.09 in 14 starts. Being put on a regular schedule helped him greatly, as he logged 60 1/3 innings, allowed just 53 hits, and struck out 74 opponents while walking just 10 batters.

He had to sit out the 2020 season because of the Coronavirus pandemic which shut down the minor leagues, but was still able to make a few starts for the Atenienses de Manati in the Puerto Rican League during the winter. Those appearances came right after he was included in a major trade, being sent to the Texas Rangers alongside Dane Dunning in return for veteran Lance Lynn, on December 7, 2020.
