Biographical Information[edit]

Catcher Austin Bossart was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 14th round of the 2015 amateur draft out of local Ivy League school the University of Pennsylvania. He began his career that season with the Williamsport Crosscutters of the New York-Penn League where he hit .333 in 37 games. He again did well in 2016, combining for a .289 average in 48 games between the Lakewood BlueClaws and Clearwater Threshers. He was back with Clearwater in 2017, acting as the team's number 2 catcher and hitting .244/.285/.333 in 54 games. He also played one game in AA with the Reading Fightin' Phils that year.

Bossart was with Reading full time in 2018 where he hit .273 with 7 homers and 29 RBIs in 54 games. He was by then entrenched in a role as an organizational catcher, a back-up catcher providing solid defense behind the dish, and whose offensive contributions, whatever it may be, was a bonus. 2019 was more of the same, as he was back with Reading, although he saw more action than before. By the end of July, he had reached .200 at-bats for the first time of his professional career, but also sported his lowest batting average, .195 in 63 games. On July 29th, he was traded to the New York Mets in return for starting pitcher Jason Vargas. He had been a college teammate of Bradley Wilpon, son of Mets CEO Jeff Wilpon.
