Atsushi Watanabe (渡辺 敦)

Biographical Information[edit]

Atsushi Watanabe represented Japan in the 1997 Intercontinental Cup. He hit .286/.375/.286 with one run and one RBI in five games; only future major leaguer Kosuke Fukudome played DH more for them (4 G to 3). His lone game in the field, he was in center for eight innings but did not handle a chance (Takayuki Takabayashi was their main CF). He came up big in the Gold Medal game (he entered that game 2-for-12) upset of Cuba, which hadn't lost a game in six years or a tournament in 15 years. Stationed at DH and batting 6th, he was 2 for 4 with a walk and a run in the 11-2 rout. He played for Nissan in the Industrial League after college.
