Nelson Ashley Lloyd

Biographical Information[edit]

Ashley Lloyd was a close associate of John T. Brush when he owned the Cincinnati Reds and New York Giants at the turn of the 20th century. He made his fortune in pharmacology before meeting Brush and becoming a co-investor in his baseball enterprises, starting with the purchase of the Cincinnati Reds in 1891. Lloyd was named the club's treasurer. As Brush was still residing in Indianapolis, IN, he let Lloyd look after the day-to-day business of the club as its senior executive. He also represented the Reds at National League meetings, while, thanks to syndicate ownership, Brush was also there but as owner of the Giants.

In 1902, Brush sold the Reds in order to buy out his partner with the Giants, Andrew Freedman, and brought Lloyd with him to New York. He began to take a larger role in running the team when Brush became ill later that decade, and when he died in 1912, Ashley was co-executor of his estate, an indication of the close relationship between the two men. When Brush's shares were divided among his wife and daughters, and his son-in-law Harry Hempstead installed as team President in 1913, Lloyd became the team's treasurer. In 1919, Hempstead sold the controlling shares in the club owned by the Brush family to Horace Stoneham, but Lloyd retained his minority shares. He lost his executive responsibilities as part of the deal and retired to tend to philanthropic interests.
