Biographical Information[edit]
Art Herman pitched in a rare major league tripleheader on September 7, 1896, throwing a complete game that was one of three games that day. Source: SABR article on tripleheaders. [1] Art was in the majors with the Louisville Colonels for 14 games that year, and much more briefly with the same team in 1897. He also played in the minors through 1906, most notably winning 19 and then 20 games for the Nashville Volunteers in 1903 and 1904.
He was with the Rochester Blackbirds before pitching for the Colonels.
"Herman did very effective work in the box on the Eastern trip. He has lots of speed, and a very desperate drop ball, which is a puzzler. . . The Louisville management have recalled pitcher Herman, who has been doing star work . . " - from Sporting Life's Rochester correspondent, in the July 11, 1896 issue, at which point Art Herman had already pitched in the major leagues
