Biographical Information

Art Gardner played three years in the majors, mostly for the Houston Astros.

Gardner was a second-round pick in the 1971 amateur draft by the Astros, and hit .303 that year for Covington. Moving his way up the organization, he was at Iowa in 1975, where he was a teammate of Mike Easler, who was a couple of years older.

Art made his major league debut in September of 1975, getting into 13 games with the Astros. In 1976 he played the year with the Memphis Blues but in 1977, he spent the entire year in Houston. Of his 66 appearances, 26 were in the field.

Gardner was traded in the off-season to the San Francisco Giants, and spent most of 1978 with the Phoenix Giants, hitting 16 triples and stealing 37 bases. He came up for seven games with the Giants.

In 1979 and 1980 he was with the Denver Bears, in the Montreal Expos organization. In 1980 he hit .317 with 30 doubles, 10 triples and 14 home runs. Tim Raines, Tim Wallach and Randy Bass were teammates.

In 1981 and 1982, he played in Japan, spending both years with the Hiroshima Toyo Carp.

From 1984 to 1986 he coached at Jackson State University. He came back as a player/coach in 1986 for the Tulsa Drillers. He was a coach for the Gastonia Rangers in 1987 and then became a scout for Major League Baseball.
