Biographical Information

Art Devlin played ten seasons in the majors, mostly for the New York Giants. He was in the 1905 World Series, and led the National League in stolen bases in 1905 with 59. He was a Boston Braves coach from 1926 to 1928.

After his major league playing days Devlin continued to play several seasons in the minors, and also managed three years there.

Art was one of the early players out of Georgetown University to come to the majors. Georgetown at the time was prolific in sending players to the majors - around nine future major leaguers were at Georgetown during some of the time Devlin was there. He also played football at Georgetown, with halfback being his main position.

Through 2008 there have been four players with the last name Devlin, and all of them except for Art have been named "Jim".

Art later served as a coach for several college teams in several sports. Bill James says in the New Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract that Devlin coached Frankie Frisch at Fordham University and introduced him to John McGraw. In the Abstract, James lists Devlin as the # 58 third baseman of all time.
