Biographical Information[edit]

Art Croft played in the National Association and the National League. He is listed as the closest thing to a regular in 1875 (with the St. Louis Red Stockings) and 1878 (with the Indianapolis Blues) but not in an 1877 spent with the St. Louis Brown Stockings, even though he played 54 of the team's 60 games. He split time between first base (where he had 28 games compared to 32 for Herman Dehlman) and outfield (where he had 27 games compared to 50 for Joe Blong and Mike Dorgan and 33 for Jack Remsen). In 133 big league games, Art batted only .195. He later played for Davenport in 1879. He died of pneumonia at 29.
