Arlington National Cemetery
Arlington National Cemetery is the United States' pre-eminent cemetery for military veterans. It was established on the former landholdings of Confederate General Robert E. Lee in Arlington, VA, across the Potomac River from Washington, DC, following the Confederate States of America's defeat in the Civil War. The first graves located here were those of Civil War veterans, but they have since been joined by veterans of all other wars in which the U.S. has fought since.
Among the most prominent persons interred here is former President John F. Kennedy. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is also here.
