Biographical Information

Aritz García Goñi was born in Spain and started playing for Spanish youth national teams at the age of twelve. He was a member of the Under-21 national team when it won the 2008 European Championship. Goñi was selected to participate in the MLB European Academy during the summers of 2006 and 2007 with former major league players Barry Larkin and Rod Carew as coaches. Goñi went to the United States for college and played baseball at the schools noted above. He graduated in 2012 from the University of San Francisco with a degree in Sociology. He later earned a master's degree in Sport and Fitness Administration/Management, also from USF. Following his collegiate career, Goñi played professionally in his native Spain and logged two years in independent ball with the Rockford Aviators of the Frontier League and the Sonoma Stompers of the Pacific Association; the shortstop hit .246/.339/.330 over his US pro career. After those two seasons, Goñi played professionally in Japan for the Ehime Mandarin Pirates of the Shikoku Island League.

With the Spanish national team in the 2014 European Championship, hitting .357/.357/.429 with six runs in six games.

Since 2013, Goñi has held a number of coaching positions which are detailed on his LinkedIn page. The most notable position in the U.S. was with the USF Dons while he was in graduate school. Goñi was the Director of Baseball Operations in 2016-2017 and a volunteer assistant coach in 2018. He returned to Spain in 2020 and served in a number of coaching roles there from 2020 through 2023. He coached for them when they won the 2023 European Championship, their first title in 68 years.

In 2024, the Milwaukee Brewers hired Goñi as a development coach for their DSL Brewers 1 squad. He also coached that year for Team Europe when they played Samurai Japan.
