Biographical Information[edit]

Infielder Andrew Young was a 37th round pick by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2016 amateur draft, out of Indiana State University. He had flown under the radar all of his amateur career, being undrafted out of a high school in North Dakota, a state not known to be teeming with scouts.

He quickly established himself as a prospect as a professional, however, as he started off his career by hitting a combined .271/.356/.406 in 53 games between the State College Spikes of the New York-Penn League and the GCL Cardinals in 2016. In 2017, he started off in the Midwest League with the Peoria Chiefs, received a midyear promotion to the Palm Beach Cardinals of the Florida State League and ended his year by making a couple of appearances in the AA Texas League with the Springfield Cardinals. In 117 games, he continued to hit well, putting up a line of .278/.359/.471, with 20 doubles and 17 homers. He continued to improve in 2018 as he again played for Palm Beach and Springfield and hit .289/.379/.479 in 119 games. He continued to display solid power with 13 doubles and 21 homers. He was particularly solid in AA, where he hit .319 with 9 homers in 35 games. He followed that season with another solid performance in the Arizona Fall League, where he hit .301 in 20 games.

On December 5, 2018, he was one of three young players traded by the Cardinals - the others were C Carson Kelly and P Luke Weaver - along with a Compensation Round B pick in the 2019 amateur draft, to the Arizona Diamondbacks in return for 1B Paul Goldschmidt.
