Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Andrew Walters had an unprecedented major league debut for the Cleveland Guardians against the Tampa Bay Rays on September 12, 2024. He walked the first batter he faced in the 9th inning, José Siri, but did not do so with a pitch that missed the mark, but by committing a pitch clock violation with a full count. Siri then came in to score on a stolen base, a throwing error by catcher Bo Naylor, and a sacrifice fly.

Walters was drafted by Cleveland in the 2nd round of the 2023 amateur draft, out of the University of Miami, and made his way to the Show quickly, only needing a little over a year to make it through the minors - and that after only making his pro debut at the start of 2024. He had previously been drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 18th round in the 2022 amateur draft, but had decided to stay with Miami for another year, a decision which proved to be sage when heis draft rank improved significantly one year later. He was a dominant closer for the Hurricanes in his last two college seasons, going 0-1, 1.65 with 14 saves in 2022 and 4-0, 1.21 with 12 saves in 2023, with excellent strikeout numbers both years.
