Alfredo Unzúe debuted in the Cuban Serie Nacional for Ciego de Ávila in 2007-2008, going 2-3 with a save and a 5.85 ERA. He had an excellent sophomore season in 2008-2009 with a 8-3 record, two saves and a 2.54 ERA. It is unclear how much he relied on smoke and mirrors as he had more walks (49) than strikeouts (44) in his 92 innings. He was third in the league in ERA after Yadier Pedroso and Yuniesky Maya. He was then put on Cuba's preliminary 58-man roster for the 2009 Baseball World Cup.
