Biographical Information[edit]

Catcher Alfred Christopher was the older brother of Joe Christopher. He was in the Milwaukee Braves organization but never appeared in the U.S. minor leagues. However, he did play briefly during two winter-ball seasons in Puerto Rico (1958-59, 1961-62).

Alfred had a real feel for being a receiver. He never used a sponge in his tiny Roy Campanella-model mitt and pounded his hands with a bat to callus them. He enjoyed the challenge of catching Phil Niekro, with the Arecibo Lobos and at the Braves training camp in Waycross, Georgia, by the snake-filled Okefenokee Swamp. Bob Uecker, who said the way to catch the knuckler was to pick it up after it stopped rolling, was also in both places. (In 1961-62, Milwaukee had a working agreement with Arecibo, then managed by Luis Olmo, also a Milwaukee scout at the time.) Alfred told Ueck he was using the wrong stance, that he had to remain on the balls of his feet and shift. That style resulted in only two passed balls.
