Biographical Information

Alessandro Cappuccini played and umpired in Italy.

Cappuccini began his career in 1977 with Grosseto, allowing six runs in six innings at age 16 and going 0-1. In 1978, he was 4-10 with a 4.59 ERA. He improved to 8-9, 4.01 in 1980 though he did allow 172 hits in 143 1/3 IP. In 1981, the young right-hander was 6-7 with a 5.91 ERA; he had a 10-4, 5.40 record in 1982. Cappuccini was 8-5 with a 3.05 ERA for his hometown Grosseto club in 1983 and 7-1 in 1984. In 1985, Alessandro went 7-2 with a 3.72 ERA.

Cappuccini was 8-2 with a 2.05 ERA in 1986 and had a 5-1, 1.89 record in '87. In 1988, the veteran posted a 2-2, 3.97 record followed by 6-3, 3.65 in 1989. He began the 1990s with a 8-2, 3.59 campaign. The Grosseto veteran was 3-3 with a 2.77 ERA in 1991. His career came crashing to a halt in 1992 when he fell to 1-3, 8.64.

Overall, Cappuccini was 93-61 with a 4.11 ERA in 226 games in Italy. He allowed 1,380 hits and 505 walks in 1,260 2/3 IP while striking out 630.

Cappuccini became an umpire in Italy after his playing career ended, retiring in 2011. He was one of two Italian umpires to work in the 2007-2008 Cuban Serie Nacional. He was an umpire in the 2009 Baseball World Cup among other international appearances. He was inducted into the Italian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2013 for his umpiring work.
