Biographical Information[edit]
Aldemar Burgos has played in the minors and for the Puerto Rican national team.
He was picked by the San Diego Padres in the 8th round of the 2015 amateur draft, one pick after Chris Paddack. The signing scout was Willie Ronda. [1] He hit .225/.284/.284 that summer for the AZL Padres, with 53 whiffs in 169 at-bats. He played CF and LF. He played for the Gigantes de Carolina in the Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League that winter. In 2016, he played for the AZL Padres (.164/.203/.279 in 18 G) and Tri-City Dust Devils (.189/.232/.245 in 31 G). He split '17 between Tri-City (.239/.289/.342 in 47 G) and the Lake Elsinore Storm (0 for 7, 5 K).
He had a huge winter for Carolina in 2017-2018 at .403/.431/.484 with 10 RBI in 16 games. He won the batting title (.030 ahead of David Vidal), tied for 6th in runs (9), led with 25 hits (6 ahead of Vidal and Irving Falu), tied for 6th in RBI, was 3rd with 30 total bases (behind Vidal and Edwin Gómez), tied Johneshwy Fargas for 5th in steals (3), was 4th in slugging (between Gómez and Damek Tomscha), trailed only Vidal and Kennys Vargas in OBP and was 4th in OPS (between Gómez and Tomscha). [2] He won Rookie of the Year. [3] He again had a split summer, between Tri-City (.257/.336/.416 in 30 G) and the Fort Wayne TinCaps (.195/.259/.260 in 27 G). In the 2018 U-23 Baseball World Cup, he handled 20 chances error-free in center for Puerto Rico and hit .240/.367/.360 with eight runs in eight games. He tied for 4th in runs. [4]
That winter, he fell to .276/.321/.439 for Carolina for a big drop-off from the prior season. He had 15 runs in 28 games and finished among the leaders in average (10th, between Jan Hernandez and Jesmuel Valentin), slugging (7th, between Vimael Machin and Ivan de Jesus Jr.), runs (tied de Jesus for 9th) and homers (3, tied for 4th with Rey Fuentes, A.J. Jimenez and Danny Ortiz). He saw limited action in 2019 for Fort Wayne (.231/.333/.346 in 9 G) and Lake Elsinore (.188/.224/.359 in 19 G) to end his time in the Padres chain. He fell to .227/.279/.320 that winter for the Gigantes. He was on Puerto Rico's roster for the 2020 Americas Olympic Qualifier before that event was one of the first baseball events canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. [5] In 2020-2021, he was only 1 for 11 with two walks and two runs for Carolina.
He made Puerto Rico's team for the Americas Olympic Qualifier when it wound up being held in 2021 (though it retained the 2020 moniker). Backing up Noel Cuevas in center, he got into one game, entering late in a 7-6 loss to Nicaragua and striking out against Berman Espinoza his lone at-bat. [6]
