Biographical Information[edit]

Alcibíades Colón was a star Dominican player of the 1940s (before pro baseball came to the island) and early 1950s.

He hit .386 for the Dominican national team that placed second in the 1950 Amateur World Series. When the Dominican League was formed in 1951, he was with the Tigres del Licey, hitting .270/.331/.322 in the regular season but going 8-for-21 with a double and three runs in the finals as the team won the first Dominican title. He hit .266/.324/.338 in 1952 and .208/.259/.292 in the finals. In '53, he produced at a .338/.400/.382 clip with 42 runs in 54 games. He was 4 for 19 with four runs in the finals as Licey won its second title. He was third in the league in runs and second in average.

During 1954, the Mao native hit .306/.349/.374 in the regular season and was 1 for 10 in the finals. He got the first hit in the history of Estadio Trujillo in 1955, off Don Elston. He finished the season at .247/.273/.247 as a part-time player and went 1 for 2 in the playoffs. He also got into five games for the Mexico City Red Devils that year. The old-timer was 1 for 11 in 1956 and 0 for 2 in the finals then retired due to his feelings of racism on the part of then-Licey manager Eddie Lopat.

In 1991, he was inducted into the Dominican Sports Hall of Fame.
