Biographical Information[edit]

Al Yates hit a decent .277 during his 24 games in the majors with the Milwaukee Brewers in 1971, although he did not draw many walks or have much power. The team batting average was .229.

Al was born in Jersey City, NJ and attended what later became Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania. At age 19 in 1964 he was playing in the minors in the organization of the New York Mets, where he would continue for three and a half years. He showed good power during a half season with the Auburn Mets, hitting 20 homers in 69 games. He was traded in the summer of 1967 to the Boston Red Sox organization and played in the minors for them through 1970. In his best year in that organization, he put up a batting line of .304/.389/.507 with the 1970 Louisville Colonels. Traded after that season to the Milwaukee Brewers, he finally came to the majors shortly before he turned 26 in the first part of the 1971 season. He also spent time in the minors that year with the Evansville Triplets, with a line of .342/.436/.623 in 35 games. It was the end of his pro career.

Al was beaned three times while playing for Evansville, and apparently spent the end of the minor league season in the hospital. Source: The Sporting News, Aug. 28, 1971.

At the time of his death, Al had lived in Venice, FL for over a decade. [1]
