Biographical Information[edit]

Al Weddige spent 16 seasons in professional baseball, playing at the turn of the 20th century. A skilled batsmen, the multi-positional talent hit .352 with 187 hits, 98 runs scored and 22 steals in 123 games for the Toledo Swamp Angels/Terre Haute Hottentots in 1895. With the New Bedford Whalers/Browns in 1896, he hit .350 with 161 hits in 105 games and with the Norfolk Jewels in 1897, he hit .322 with 180 hits, 35 doubles and 29 stolen bases in 135 games. In 1904, with the Fall River Indians, Weddige batted .330 with 165 hits and 36 doubles in 124 games. He also tried his hand at pitching, taking the mound in seven different seasons, though he peaked at 9 appearances in 1890.

In just his second professional campaign, 1890, he was called upon to manage the Sterling Blue Coats/Galesburg/Burlington club for part of the year, the third of four managers that 30-72 club had. He replaced Charles Wirsche and was replaced by Clarence Hoyt. In 1906, he was the second of three managers for the Lawrence Colts, replacing John A. Smith and being replaced by Jim Rolley. He was the third of three managers for the Lancaster Lanks in 1911, replacing Gus Epler.
