Biographical Information[edit]
Al Metcalfe played eight games for the 1875 New York Mutuals. Mostly playing third base, he hit .219, which was five points higher than the regular third baseman, Joe Gerhardt. Candy Nelson, who hit .199, also played a lot at third.
This site [1] has some background on Metcalfe. It acknowledges that Baseball Reference states Metcalfe was born in Brooklyn, but suggests he might actually have been born in Canada. After baseball, Al became a druggist and then was "chief clerk of the Brooklyn Health Department". He was active in Democratic politics.
Through 2019, the only other major leaguer with the last name Metcalfe has been Mike Metcalfe, although there have been a couple players named Metcalf.
