After his playing career he became an umpire. He worked a full season in the National League in 1899, then was a member of the American League's umpiring crew in its inaugural season as a major league, 1901. He returned as an umpire in the Federal League in 1914.
On August 7, 1901, he was punched by Milwaukee Brewers manager Hugh Duffy, when he declared that a ball that barely touched the foul line was fair, resulting in a 5-4 win for the Cleveland Blues. Duffy was suspended for his gesture.
