Biographical Information[edit]
Al Kenders played 10 games for the Philadelphia Phillies in 1961. This was the only season he played in the major leagues. Kenders played in the minors from 1956 to 1963 with only part of a year at AAA. His best minor league season came with the 1959 Des Moines Demons, when he set career highs in average (.301), home runs (10) and RBI (66).
It doesn't happen often, but sometimes a player's death falls through the cracks and is not discovered for many years. Such is the case with Kenders, whose January 2013 passing was not found until July 2019 -- initially by an independent researcher, then verified by Society for American Baseball Research members. Per his adopted son, Kenders wished to keep his baseball career in the past once he retired, and upon his death no obituary or stories were published notifying the public.
