Biographical Information[edit]
Akira Shinya was a player and an umpire in Nippon Pro Baseball.
The Toei Flyers took him in the 6th round of the 1972 NPB draft. By the time he made it to the Pacific League in 1974, the team was the Nippon Ham Fighters; he played three games in the field but did not bat. He hit .211/.268/.237 in 43 plate appearances over 34 games for the 1977 Fighters. After not batting in seven games in 1978, he retired as a player.
Becoming a Pacific League umpire, he worked 1,703 games, including the 1987 NPB All-Star Games and 1994 NPB All-Star Games.
