Biographical Information[edit]
Akio Ishii played for and managed the Japanese national team. His brother Takashi Ishii pitched and coached in Nippon Pro Baseball.
Akio was picked by the Yokohama BayStars in the 2nd round of the 1986 NPB draft but did not sign. He then played for Tokyo Gas in the industrial leagues from 1987-1998. He caught for Japan in the 1987 Asian Championship (they won a Silver Medal and won a spot in the 1988 Olympics; one of their other catchers was the bound-for-stardom Atsuya Furuta) and 1987 Intercontinental Cup (a Bronze Medal). He later managed Tokyo Gas from 2003-2005. He managed Japan to a Gold in the 2017 Asian Championship.
