Biographical Information[edit]

Bert Peña managed Puerto Rico in the 2005 Baseball World Cup and 2006 Central American and Caribbean Games. He hit his only career home run for the Houston Astros on September 2, 1984 against Ricky Horton of the St. Louis Cardinals.

While he was born in Santurce, he moved to Caguas at a young age and lived there for the remainder of his life (except for his time playing in the U.S.) While his major league career was a short one, he was a fixture in baseball circles in Puerto Rico, playing two decades in the Puerto Rican League for the Criollos de Caguas, Indios de Mayagüez and Senadores de San Juan. He also coached amateur baseball on the island and was the manager of the Puerto Rican national team for a spell, including at the 2005 Baseball World Cup and the 2006 Central American and Caribbean Games. He died in 2023 of cancer of the esophagus, having fought the disease a number of times before succumbing.

His son Roberto Peña had a long professional career, reaching AAA.
