2020 Olympics (Qualification)
These are the qualifiers for the six spots in the 2020 Olympics.
Automatic Qualifier[edit]
Japan, the 1984 champion and 1996 Silver Medalist, automatically qualified as host.
Premier 12 Qualifier[edit]
The top finisher from the Americas and the top non-Japanese finisher from Asia/Oceania (if they make the top six) from the 2019 Premier 12 will earn spots in the Olympics. South Korea won the Asia/Oceania spot and Mexico won the Americas slot.
Africa/Europe Qualifier[edit]
The top five teams from the 2019 European Championship ( Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Israel and Czech Republic) and the winner of the 2019 African Championship ( South Africa) met in the 2019 Europe/Africa Olympic Qualifier (9/18/19-9/22/19) with one spot in the Olympics at stake. Israel won the qualifier.
Americas Qualifier[edit]
- American teams who played in the 2019 Premier 12 but did not yet qualify ( Canada, Dominican Republic, Cuba, United States, Puerto Rico and Venezuela) and the top two finishers from the 2019 Pan American Games who did not play in the 2019 Premier 12 ( Nicaragua, Colombia) will meet in the 2020 Americas Olympic Qualifier to determine one spot. This was originally scheduled to take place in March 2020, but was pushed back to June 2021. United States won the qualifier.
Intercontinental Qualifier[edit]
- The 2020 Final Olympic Qualification Tournament was to feature the second-place finisher from the Africa/Europe Qualifier ( Netherlands, the second-place and third-place teams from the Americas Qualifier ( Dominican Republic, Venezuela), the top two finishers from the 2019 Asian Championship who had not yet qualified ( Chinese Taipei, People's Republic of China) and the Oceania champion ( Australia when no one else stepped forward to challenge them in the qualifier). China, Australia and Taiwan withdrew prior to the event, the latter two citing COVID-19 safety restrictions that limited their practice opportunities. The Dominican Republic won the final spot.
