History, Comments, Contributions[edit]

As has been par for the course in the Mike Ilitch regime, the 2005 Detroit Tigers were a struggling bunch that rarely generated much excitement in Comerica Park. Some had hopes that maybe this team could contend for an AL Central title if it could remain healthy. That never happened. And some key players that were expected to produce solid seasons simply didn't do that. Pudge Rodriguez expressed his discontent all season long and that discontent hit a high point with manager Alan Trammell. That may have spelled the doom for Trammell, a hometown hero. Many felt Trammell was hired to deflect the blow of a poor team in the clubhouse and that he would buy the team some time to rebuild. From day one many in the stands questioned his managerial ability, while others argued he was playing chess without his queen and rooks. Still, at the season's end, he was the one who was fired. Hired in his place was was Jim Leyland, someone expected to get control of the clubhouse in 2006. Indeed, the Tigers would go on to win the 2006 AL pennant under Leyland.
